Magic
Throughout much of the First Age, the usage of ancient magic known only to the mages of Ectoria was kept sheltered within their shrouded cult. But at the end of the Age, Ierun the Wise convinced the High Council of Mages to teach certain spells to the mundane people of the world. He succeeded in expanding the magical knowledge of the common man, but only slightly. Ierun’s work was interrupted with the rise of the Traditionalists, who were opposed to sharing the secrecies of magic with those not part of the Order of Mages. The rebel magicians waged a bloody six-year war against the rest of the Order on the premise of violating the Oath of Secrecy, one of the Seven Troths required for inductees into the society. After over 200 thousand deaths and the obliteration of countless mage strongholds, the conservative insurgents officially seceded from the Order of Mages. This war, known as the Great Mage Division, almost resulted in the annihilation of the Order. Only after Emperor Monathis of Akren, restored the integrity of the Order of Mages in 2066 did the use of magic become commonplace at last, as was Ierun’s last wish.
Magic and Classes
Each citizen of Ectoria is given one of seven classes, or battle styles, upon joining the server. Depending on your class, your starting spells will vary. Every class is given the repair spell by default, but the Battle Mage class possesses the most versatile and formidable starting spells for beginning players. It is recommended that you choose the Battle Mage class if you are looking for magic to be your primary mode of transportation and combat. Battle Mages are the only class allowed to join the Order of Mages, but they are not required to under any circumstances. However, some spells are exclusive to the Order and may only be obtained through completing quests given by the High Mage.
Acquiring New Spells
While every class has some standard spells to start out with, it is recommended that all players attempt to gain more magical abilities. This will assist you greatly in times of war. Spell-books, referred to as tomes, were hidden from the rebellious mages in the Order as tension grew between the Traditionalists and the Liberalists before the Great Mage Division overtook Ectoria. These scraps of magical knowledge still lie in their original homes, inside menacing towers and cheerless dungeons. If you wish to acquire these hidden treasures, you may enter these ancient strongholds—at your own risk. For there is a reason that the tomes have laid in undisturbed peace for a thousand years… The mages of old summoned terrible beasts to guard their troves, and they have endured countless hardships in fulfilling their duty—to forever guard the tomes from the prying hands of the Traditionalists. They still stand tall and firm, and to get these spells you must pass their deathly gaze. If you manage to slip past the mages’ beasts, you may not take the tome from its safe room. Doing so may have unpleasant repercussions. These towers and dungeons lie scattered across the map, and they will always prove rewarding upon completion. Try to find them all!
